She had her first doctor's appointment yesterday to check her weight. She's down to about 7.6 pounds, which is normal weight loss for the first few days. The nurse needed to check her temperature, too, so I changed her diaper to get ready for it. Kate decided that would be a great time to empty the rest of her bowels. She got a little on me, not too bad, but I had to get another diaper. Then the nurse took her temperature rectally. Kate was having none of that, and she had apparently saved some more poop for just such an event. She got me much better that time. I think the nurse wisely took her temp from the side, because she knows better than to stand in the direct line of pooping. Then while I was getting yet another diaper from the bag, she peed all over the table. Impeccable timing. Couldn't have planned it better myself.
And this is why doctors make the nurses do things like take rectal temperatures and give shots. They paid a lot of money so they wouldn't have to.
The doctor said she's doing great, noted the obvious fact that my milk has come in since they are about a quadruple D size right now, and did all the other little things like check her ears and eyes. Kate is a little jaundiced, but just barely. Not enough to need to take any action, which makes me happy.
And you'd think that would be the end of the pooping debacles, but that would be wrong.
Later that same day I was changing her very wet diaper, and the pooping baby struck again. This time her aim and volume was much better. She got me all the way from my shoulder down to my knee in a fine seedy spray, just how a healthy baby should poop all over her mom.
Lindsay was not a fan. She was in the room with me, and she got a worried look on her face and said, "I don't like that, Mommy."
Me neither, Lindsay, me neither.
I am being much more careful when changing her diaper now. Good thing she's really adorable, or I might actually hold her pooping against her.

And I thought having little boys was bad! But I surely don't have any stories like that! :)
And you're right--she is pretty cute.
"I don't like that, Mommy!" is AWESOME!
She is very cute!
Motherhood just isn't complete unless you've been pooped on.
This post made me smile :) Every mother can relate for sure!
I forgot how much newborns poop. good luck with that :)
and let me know if you had time to make a nursing cover... I'll be home in August and would be happy to make one if you didn't have time.
I love this! In fact, I pretty much love every post right now. :)
Way to look at the poop experience in a memorable and amusing way instead of just being totally "blown away" by it. hehehe. You rock Becca!
You are right on about the nurse vs. doctor thing. I've been pooped and peed on too many times by other people's kids!!
